The telecommunications sector has revolutionised the way we live our lives today.
Tanzania’s telcos are household names, known for helping us stay connected to our loved ones.
Some of us are becoming accustomed to the other personal services our telcos provide. These companies have gone beyond providing us with the means to call family and friends to transforming into our banks, changing things like how we save and pay our bills.
What some of us don’t yet realise, however, is that these same telcos are having a profound impact on the business environment in Tanzania too.
The same companies that brought us mobile money solutions are finding new and creative ways to support small and medium enterprises, who are the backbone of our economy.
SMEs are a vital cog in the wheel for the socio-economic development of our country. SMEs contribute nearly a third of Tanzania’s GDP and employ more than 5.2 million Tanzanians.
The country as a whole is now supported by the telecommunications sector more than ever. As such, it is vital the right conditions are cultivated, to allow this industry to reach its full potential.
We must be willing for the sector to adapt and change when necessary.
Experts, including the international trade body for the telecoms sector, have begun calling for the consolidation of the sector.
Consolidation simply means having fewer players in the market that can offer more scale and better products. Experts cite the increased incentive to invest in a more consolidated market, which ultimately provides a better quality service for all customers.
Allowing the consolidation of the market would lead to concrete benefits for us all, and would help the sector to continue providing for individuals and businesses alike. All Tanzanians should hope the Government allows the sector to thrive.
